"The 4-Step Coupon Plan"

>> July 12, 2011

Alot of people have asked me where they begin? Where do they get coupons? How do I do what I do? My response is by using a 4 step coupon plan. Here's how it goes:

Step #1 - Coupons: Where to get your coupons? There are several different ways to get coupons. The most popular way is the Sunday newspapers. The papers contain several inserts, Red Plum, Smartsource and P&G. Each of these inserts carry a good amount of coupons. Each paper is $2.00 and can be purchased at your local gas stations or grocery stores on Sundays. I usually purchase 2 - 3 papers each week. Another way to get coupons is online, called printable coupons. Printable coupons can either be manufacturer coupons or store coupons. Depending on where you get them from. You can get great manufacturer coupons from coupons.com, RedPlum.com, or SmartSource.com.

Another type of coupon are store coupons. Walgreens has store coupons that you can combine with a manufacturer coupon (per item) and these can be found right in the front of the store when you walk in. They also sometimes carry booklets that are found throughout the store that carry store coupons, for example the Summer Beauty Guide. Another store that carries store coupons is Rite Aid. They have coupons that actually appear on their weekly ads as well as what they call Video Values coupons. You can sign up for Video Values here for absolutely free. Rite Aid video values is a site that allows you to watch a short video clip about a product for a coupon value off that specific product. The videos and products change each month. Since Rite Aid allows you to stack one manufacturer coupon + a store coupon per item these store coupons stacked with manufacturer coupons can make for great deals! Another store that does store coupons is Target. You can find the Target coupons online here. Target also allows you to stack one Target coupon + one manufacturer coupon per item. Meijer also does store coupons in two different forms. The first way is called mperks. When you check out at the register you may have noticed an option on the credit card machine that says mperks. Mperks can be found here. You can sign up for free using your cell phone number. Once you sign up they offer you coupons you can clip electronically. While you are being checked out you can click the mperks button & type in your number and the coupons you have electronically clipped will automatically be taken off your items for that purchase! It's a very easy way to save. Another way Meijer offers coupons is called Meijer Mealbox, which looks like this:

If you click on the Specials Tab, there is also a Coupons tab where you will find 2 different pages of Meijer coupons that can be printed. Meijer also allows you to stack one Meijer coupon + manufacturer coupon per item. So this is a great way to save on groceries by stacking their coupons!

You can also find coupons in Magazines. Women's publications such as Woman's Day, Red Book, Family Circle and Good Housekeeping frequently carry manufacturer coupons.

Or you can find them in store. Look for coupons on store shelves, on products and on the back of your receipts. Also look for coupons to print out at the register

The last place I'm going to tell you about is called clipping services! If you find a good deal coming up, and want to stock up on an item and you know there is a coupon you need. You can go to a clipping service and order the coupon in large quantities. I have found several clipping services that work great and are super fast. Here are the links:

www.weclipusave.com
www.couponcarryout.com
Step #2 - Organization: Once you start collecting a large amount of coupons, you want to find a way to keep them organized. What is the sense of having all these coupons if you will never be able to find them right? I currently have 4 different category index boxes. Each are alphabetized. So that way when I'm in the store and find a great deal I can go directly to where I would find the coupon. Find a way to organize your coupons that fit you best, some people carry them in binders organized alphabetically. Some people keep them in whole inserts in protection pages. It's up to you! If you're still uncertain, look up ways to organize coupons and there are thousands of ways people do it for you to choose from.

Step #3 - Match-ups: Match-ups is a term used to define matching store sales with the coupons that are out there! This is the key to couponing. Most couponers almost never purchase anything that's not on sale & that they don't have a coupon for. That's how they save so much! So how in the world do you match sales with coupons? In this day & age it's easy! There are THOUSANDS of coupon match-up sites that will provide you with different stores, what's on sale at those stores and all of the coupons that are available to match up with that sale. It's an amazing way to start developing a shopping plan prior to the week. What I always do is search my store's name + coupon matchup and the upcoming week number. The upcoming week because you are developing a plan for sales on the following week :) Keep in mind match-ups depend on store ads, so most match-ups aren't posted until Thursday or Friday before the week. So, for example this week I'd type in, "Meijer Coupon Matchups for 7/17." Since I have been doing this for over a month now, I have picked out and bookmarked a few of my favorite store match-ups and of course I will be sharing them with you! One thing to keep in mind is, some of these sites are from different areas. Unfortunately, some of their stores double coupons and in West Michigan they do not :( yes I know, sad story. BUT usually the sites will clarify the different pricing with doubling & without.

    http://forthemommas.com/

Step #4 Plan: The final and last step is creating a shopping plan. Using the match-up sites you can create a fully thought out list of things you want to purchase that are on sale, pull out all the coupons you will need and go to work! This is where you want to make sure all your coupons are the exact same as the product you will be purchasing. This step is the step you will figure out how many transactions you will be making to maximize your savings. I also include on my list pricing & how much my coupons will be saving me. Here is an example of a shopping trip I made just this week at Meijer:

    Transaction #1:
    Buy (2) Chi-Chi’s Tortillas (price drop thru 7/24) $2.00 ($4.00)
Buy (1) Hormel Natural Choice Lunchmeat (FREE with mPerks coupon)
          - use (2) $0.50/1 Chi-Chi’s Tortillas 6/12 SS (-$2.00)
          - $2.00/2 Mperks Coupon (-$2.00)
Final Price OOP (Out of Pocket): FREE $0.00
    Buy (2) Kraft Mac & Cheese 5pk $3.45 each ($6.90)
    Buy (20) Kool-Aid Drink Mixes $.10 each ($2.00)
          -  use (2) 10 FREE Kool-Aid peelie coupons found on Kraft Mac & Cheese (-$2.00)
Final Price OOP: $6.90 + tax
+ Catalina Coupon for free 5 lb bag of Meijer Sugar
    Transaction#2:
Buy (1) 5 lb bag of Meijer brand sugar
    - use OYNO coupon for FREE 5 lb bag of sugar (from transaction #1)

    Final Price OOP: $0.00 FREE
TOTAL FINAL PRICE: $6.96 + tax

So as you can see it's an extremely well thought out plan that I made by using my match-up sites. Pulled coupons that I had organized. Then went shopping and saved over $30.00 for just a simple little trip!

So there it is :) My 4 Step coupon plan! Once you get started it may take some time getting use to, but after you get the hang of it and understand everything that you are doing it's a piece of cake! I hope this helps you in your journey to saving. If you have any questions or need any clarification feel free to ask. Otherwise ta ta for now!

Shopping at Rite Aid with +UP Rewards

    >> July 11, 2011

I never used to shop at drugstores, just because they always seemed so expensive and I never wanted to make an extra trip outside of where I get my groceries. Little did I know just how much I was missing out on! Rite Aid has now become one of my favorite places to shop :)

Rite Aid like many other drugstores have what is called a Wellness program. It's absolutely free and it allows you to qualify for all their sales and to receive all their rewards. You can sign up here.

The key to saving at Rite Aid is their +UP rewards. These rewards are coupons that are printed out after a purchase directly on your receipt from the Manufacturer. They usually state, thanks from "the name of the manufacturer." Then have a $ amount with a barcode. They usually have limit restrictions which means, there is a limit to the amount of the +UP coupons you can get from the manufacturer. You can think of +UPs as Rite Aid money :) remember when you were little and used play money to get things you wanted? Yes, that is the idea! Excepts, this is very real haha.

My suggestion if you are just getting started is to go in to the store looking for different +UP deals on products you have coupons for. Pay for your very 1st transaction all up front, then you will get a ton of +UP that you can then roll over to your next purchase on more products with +UP's to continue rolling over that money. The key is to keep rolling your +UP over from transaction to transaction so you NEVER have to pay a large amount out of pocket. It's almost like using Rite Aid bucks to pay for all the merchandise you are getting! Here is what they look like:

The store will promote these +UP rewards in their weekly ad as well as in the store! So for example, one sale that you see often at Rite Aid is toothpaste. Remember that awesome picture with all the toothpaste I got? Here's how  I did it. In the weekly ad there was a picture of Colgate Max Toothpaste on sale for $2.79. Directly underneath the price there was a +UP $2.79. Which means when I buy one toothpaste at $2.79 I get $2.79 coupon back on my receipt, ultimately making it free using zero of my coupons! Now if I had a coupon to add to this deal, it would make this purchase a money maker, which means I'm coming out with more money than I went in! There was a limit of 4 +UP for the toothpaste.

So I headed up to the register with 4 toothpastes and planned four different transactions since I didn't have a large amount of +UPs to cover the entire balance. Since this was my very first transaction "extreme" couponing I had to pay for the first transaction since I didn't have any +UP to apply toward my balance. The first transaction I paid the full price $2.79 + tax. Then the receipt printed out with $2.79 +UP or what I like to call "Rite Aid bucks." So then I began my 2nd transaction, total was again $2.79 + tax. I then handed over my "Rite Aid bucks" from my 1st transaction & the cashier swipes it through just like a regular coupon. My total was $0.18 cents for a tube of toothpaste that was originally $4.29! Then I got my receipt for that purchase, and yet ANOTHER +UP was printed. So I handed over my tube of toothpaste for my third transaction. Paid with my "Rite Aid bucks" from transaction #2 and again my total was $0.18 cents and received yet another +UP coupon for $2.79. My final transaction I did the same, cashier rang up the toothpaste and I handed my $2.79 +UP coupon. Paid $0.18 cents and then got my last +UP reward for $2.79. Now since there was a limit to 4 +UP if I were to buy more of this toothpaste, no more +UP's would print. So I leave the store with one coupon for $2.79 that I can then put towards my following purchase on +UP items! My mom actually did this same deal, so that's how we got a total of 8 toothpastes! Now if you had a large amount of +UP to roll over you wouldn't have to do individual transactions. You could ring them up all together, use your +UP rewards to cover the entire balance then get 4 $2.79 +UP on your receipt. Either way, works out the same!

What do you think are you ready to try it out? :) How about it. This week 07/10 - 07/17 the Softsoap Body Wash is on sale for $2.99 and it's originally $5.29. There is a great deal that ends up making it FREE. Yes I said it FREE! You buy (1) Softsoap BodyWash @ $2.99 you get $2 +UP reward. Making it only $0.99 cents. But wait there is a coupon for $1 off 1 Softsoap Bodywash making this completely free! Originally there were 4 here, but my dad already ran off with one. Haha.

Here's how to get them for free:

Since it may be your first purchase you can either ring them up each in separate transactions or you if you have enough money I suggest purchasing them all together so you can get all your +UP's at the end & start rolling over a good amount of +UP's and never have to pay out of pocket.

First, there is a $1 off 1 Manufacturer Softsoap coupon available in the Walgreens Summer Beauty Guide. Yes, Walgreens. Even though it states redeemable at Walgreens, the back of the coupon states manufacturer and just to be sure the coupon barcode does begin with a 5, which means it's acceptable anywhere that accepts Manufacturer coupons. These booklets look like this:

You can find these books at your local Walgreens, near the makeup counters or hanging up around that area. I simply asked the cashier where they were :) I picked up 4 of them so I could have 4 of the Softsoap coupons.

Once you have your coupons clipped and ready, your ready to hit Rite Aid! Select 4 Softsoaps with your favorite scents. If you choose to pay for these up front all at once, you can just hand them to the cashier. Once they are all rung up, hand over the 4 coupons. Your total should be $7.96 plus tax. Your receipt will then print out with 4 +UP rewards for $2 totaling $8.00 in +UP rewards. Meaning after your rewards, all you paid for 4 body washes was sales tax & saved $20.96 cents, you just can't beat that!

Do you understand their +UP system better? Hopefully you are able to try this out & let me know how it goes! If you have any problems @ the store, don't be afraid to ask the cashier for clarification or help. If you're still confused, feel free to comment under this blog & I will be more than willing to help you out! That's what I'm here for :)

    GOOD LUCK!

    Getting Started: Coupon 101

    >> July 10, 2011

    Hello everyone!

It's been about a month & a half since I've 1st started couponing with EVERYTHING & ANYTHING I do. It has already saved me more money than I could EVER imagine. As I've become better & better at this art, I've had a handful of people ask me to teach them how to save. So this is the sole purpose behind this blog, to teach others in need how to save money and help others to find those deals! So, let's get started :)

I'm going to break it down to the most BASIC steps possible so as to make it easiest for EVERYONE to understand.

So the first thing you need to begin to understand obviously, are the coupons, which may seem rather simple but can quickly become overwhelming when you throw in limits, overage, and all the varying coupon policies.

The 1st type of coupons are Manufacturer Coupons. Usually the coupon actually has printed the words "Manufacturer Coupon" on it, but there are exceptions where the consumer is left in confusion. If uncertain, MOST all manufacturer coupons' barcode begin with the number 5. Manufacturer coupons are monetary values from the actual manufacturer of the product. These coupons can be found in the Sunday newspapers, online websites, social networking sites and many other areas.

The 2nd type of coupons are Store Coupons. Store coupons carry a monetary value given directly from the store. These coupons can be found in different locations varying from store to store. Some stores offer coupon booklets, others provide online clipping forums.

Which leads me to my next topic of discussion. Store acceptance. Each store has a different coupon policy. Some provide limits to the amount of coupons accepted, others prohibit certain type of coupons with a specific sale, each store has a different limit to the amount of coupons accepted per item, etc. There are hundreds of stores with varying coupon policies. So my suggestion to you is to study the stores policies you shop at, or perhaps even take a peek at other store's coupon policies near you. The more you understand the policy the better your savings will be :) I have provided below a link of some of the coupon policies I shop at. Click on each store and check them out! While checking out each of your store's policies, look for what makes that store's policies different. How may it be better? How may it be worse? We'll go over later some of the benefits & downfalls of the coupon policies of national stores in the US.

    Rite Aid

    Walgreens

    CVS

    Meijer

    Walmart

Well that's it for today! Don't want to throw too much information at you @ once. I'll be posting more and more as we go, including answering questions, finding deals and lots more! Bear with me as the blog gets updated and moved around to a more efficient manner.

    And remember,
    DON'T THROW AWAY COUPONS!

    Ta ta for now :)
